エマとのメーティングの前にルークが暮らしていたのは、陸橋のそばにある古びた建物だった。
表向きは廃業した倉庫のようにも見えるが、内部はまるでショールームのように整えられている。
照明をつけると浮かび上がるのは、最新のランボルギーニ。
深いメタリックのボディがコンクリートの壁に映える。
その隣には、マットブラックのドゥカティ。
どちらも、現実ではまずお目にかかれない特別仕様だ。
さらには、バーカウンターとソファ、音響が備えられたシアタースペース。
そこは、夢と孤独が溶け合う、静かな聖域だった。

ルークがTri-Boroの住人になったのは、祖父であるアーニーの影響だった。
アーニーは、酒と女とギャンブルで人生を転げ落ちた一族の中の負け犬だったが、クラリスの祖父がその借金を肩代わりする代償として、研究所の“サンプル収集”への協力を命じた。
こうして、彼の運命は思わぬ方向へと転がり始めたのである。
アーニーは、豪華なクルーザーやスポーツカーを使って標的の女性たちを誘惑し、遺伝子的に「適合」した子どもたちを次々と残していった。
そして、その多くが“Tri-Boroの住人”として地下社会に迎え入れられていったわけだ。
誰にも知られていない、理髪店の裏手。
アーニーはその奥に、「ファミリー」を築いた。
成功者ではなかったが、誰よりも人間らしく、情に厚いアーニーの存在だけが、ルークが研究用の“サンプル”ではなく“ヒト”である唯一の証だった。
祖父アーニーと同じく、ルークは「ヘテロ接合体」と呼ばれる遺伝的タイプである。
これは、両親のうちどちらか一方にだけ遺伝子の異常がある場合に生まれる、中間的な存在を指す。
一方、研究所が本当に欲しているのは、「ホモ接合体」と呼ばれる完全なサンプルだった。
それは、両親ともに異常な遺伝子を持っていることで生まれる、いわば“純粋な異常体”だ。
しかし、ホモ接合体を狙って両親とも異常を持つ者同士を交配させると、ほとんどが失敗に終わってしまう。
受精そのものがうまくいかず、たとえ成立しても流産の可能性が高い。
無事に生まれても、短命であるケースが多かった。
そのため研究所は、比較的安定して子どもを作れるヘテロ接合体同士を掛け合わせ、そこからごくまれに生まれてくるホモ接合体だけを選んで育てる、という方法をとっていた。
ルークの存在理由も、その戦略の中にある。
“ヘテロ同士の掛け合わせ”に必要な「種」―
つまり、ルークは繁殖装置として飼われているに過ぎなかった。
感情など、本来は邪魔なノイズでしかなかったが、ルークの中にはまだ、完全には消えないものがあった。
祖父アーニーから受け継いだ、微かな「人間性」。
このときのルークはまだ知らなかった。
エマという存在が、それを目覚めさせる引き金になるとは――。

Resident of Tri-Boro: Luke
Before mating with Emma, Luke lived in an old building near an overpass.
At a glance, it looked like an abandoned warehouse, but the interior was arranged like a high-end showroom.
When the lights came on, a brand-new Lamborghini came into view.
Its deep metallic body reflected off the raw concrete walls.
Next to it sat a matte-black Ducati.
Both vehicles were rare, custom models—practically impossible to see in the real world.
There was also a bar counter, a sofa, and a theater space with a full audio setup.
It was a silent sanctuary, where dreams and solitude melted into one.
The reason Luke became a resident of Tri-Boro traced back to his grandfather, Arnie.
Arnie had been the black sheep of a family that had fallen apart due to booze, women, and gambling.
As repayment for his massive debts, Clarice’s grandfather had ordered him to assist in the lab’s “sample collection.”
And so, Arnie’s life began to take a turn—though not the one anyone had expected.
Using flashy yachts and exotic sports cars, Arnie seduced target women,
fathering genetically “suitable” children one after another.
Many of those children eventually found their way into the hidden society of Tri-Boro.
Behind an unassuming barbershop—known to no one—
Arnie built what he called a “family.”
He was no success story, but his deeply human, emotional nature
was the only thing that proved Luke was more than just a “sample.”
It proved he was a person.
Just like his grandfather, Luke was genetically classified as a “heterozygote.”
This term referred to someone born when only one parent carried a genetic abnormality,
resulting in a middle-ground genetic structure.
What the lab truly sought, however, were “homozygotes”—
children born from two parents who both carried abnormalities.
These pure genetic specimens were considered ideal,
but mating between two homozygotes had an extremely high failure rate.
Fertilization often failed, and even when it succeeded,
miscarriage was common, and most births ended in short, fragile lives.
That was why the lab adopted a different strategy:
pairing heterozygotes—who could reproduce more reliably—
and selecting only the rare homozygote children that occasionally resulted.
Luke existed solely to serve that strategy.
He was the “seed” required for heterozygote pairings—
a breeding instrument, nothing more.
Emotions were nothing more than a useless noise—something to be discarded.
And yet, within Luke, something still lingered, refusing to be extinguished.
A faint trace of humanity, inherited from his grandfather, Arnie.
At the time, Luke had no way of knowing—Emma’s presence would become the spark that awakened it once more.
